Rowland Kirks, federal court official court official Mother, son head north on a mower Associated Press ORLANDO By the time you read this, Betty Miller and her son Donnie Payton will probably be somewhere around the Ocala Forest, chugging along on their Mrs.
Miller 22-year-old son are headed for lawnmower on a record journey. Horse Cave, 800 miles from their starting place in Osteen, southwest of Daytona Beach. But their real objective is the Guinness Book of World Records. "Crazy, but fun," was the way Mrs. Miller explained the first day's trip Tuesday, after covering 35 miles and sleeping in her husband's covered pickup truck at a rest stop on U.S.
17 near Barberville. She and her son were sitting around their home Monday night, thumbing through the famous book of records to see what they could do about getting their names into it. Payton, her 22-year-old son from a first marriage, wanted to set a world record on roller skates but found he had to skate more than 4,900 miles to break the mark. Looking further, he discovered there were no distance records for lawnmowers particularly not for lawnmowers pulling a cart and mowing the grass along the way. So the two built a 2-by-4-foot cart, packed it with warm clothes, sleeping bags, a flashlight, maps and two extra gallons of gasoline.
They hooked it onto the mower and off they went. On their first day, Payton rode in the cart in back while his mother drove the mower off the highway pavement because their mower isn't licensed as a motor vehicle. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper advised them to mow the grass on the road shoulders whenever possible to avoid using the mower solely for transportation, Mrs. Miller said. Mrs.
Miller's husband Delmar had mixed feelings over the long -distance mow. He's driving his pickup on ahead to each designated stop. He called it "great" but also said he was concerned for their safety "because of all the jokers out there on the highway." ST. Police say he's so quiet "you wouldn't even know he was in jail." The prisoner is Frank Diecidue, 62, whom police in Orange and Hillsborough counties identify as an organized crime bigwig, a mob power. He is in the jail in Orlando because officials in Tampa thought there was "a possibility of problems" with other inmates there, authorities said.
Diecidue's testimony in an investigation into the 1975 murder of Tampa vice agent Richard Cloud led to federal grand jury indictments of himself and 13 others on a variety of charges, including counterfeiting, extortion, cocaine trafficking and murder for hire. Last year he was convicted and sentenced to 40 years on federal racketeering charges. The conviction is on appeal. He is behind bars now for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury. Diecidue was brought to Orlando Sept.
12 and his identification card noted only that he was to be held for U.S. marshals. It wasn't until five weeks later that officials here knew of the short, graying prisoner's prominence.
